Where the line is drawn should not depend upon personal motivation
We need to reform the way political boundaries are determined, and to take it away from the politicians. It needs to be placed into the hands of fair-minded, independent arbiters whose goal is the public interest and the public good rather than parochial partisan concerns. In Florida, an effort is being made to do just that, and we should all lend our support, regardless of our personal political persuasions.

Has the honeymoon already ended for new-found relationship?
Seminole county and its cities held their initial Joint Advisory Committee meeting last week amid an initial sense of giddiness and optimism. It started out as quite a love fest, but even before it was over a scant few hours later, the relationship showed signs of strain.

School District again relents after stirring up hornets' nest of unnecessary controversy
Just when all was quiet on the eastern front of the School District's multi-faceted war with the residents of Seminole County, the District felt the need to whack the beehive and, pardon the mixed metaphors, stir up yet another hornet's nest.

Veterans memorial a costly slap in the face to those who served
Supporting our troops requires more than tying a ribbon to your car's antenna or placing a sticker on its bumper. And it certainly does not mean spending $100,000 on a monument, as the City of Winter Springs and the Rotary Club plan to do.

Light up, Oviedo: City Council's decision even worse than originally thought
Although it has been said before, it will now be said again, with much more emphasis: It is sad when city officials give approval to an establishment whose primary product will only do harm to its users. It is sadder still when those same city officials have gone out of their way to do so.

Extra penny per gallon of gas is small cost for the services it will bring
For those of us who can afford it, paying an extra penny per gallon of gas is not too much to allow for transportation for the disabled and bus service for those otherwise lacking a means of transportation. Our county commissioners should be encouraged to add the extra penny to cover these costs.

Shooting off your mouth can now lead to shooting in the street
There was a time, not long ago, when violence was considered the refuge of last resort. The goal was a less-violent society that placed a premium on reducing senseless acts of violence. The government, at least in Florida, now takes a different approach, and thinks it healthy to encourage acts of violence among its citizens.

The smoking gun: Oviedo City Council changes ordinance to allow cigar bar
Whether one smokes is a personal decision, but there are things that society does that can influence the choices people ultimately make. It is sad when city officials undercut the attempts of those messages by giving approval to an establishment whose primary product will only do harm to its users. It is sadder still when those same city officials went out of their way to do so.
