Right decision on rezoning

A state administrative judge did the right thing by giving the Seminole County School Board the green light to implement its proposed high-school-rezoning plan. After months of delay, Seminole finally can move forward with the rezoning to take effect this fall.

The School Board couldn't have asked for more clarity from Administrative Judge Jeff B. Clark, who ruled in the district's favor.

The judge correctly debunked allegations that the School Board didn't follow the proper procedure in adopting the new high-school attendance zones.

He not only ruled the board followed its own policy and procedures, but also the School Board's approval of the plan advanced by Superintendent Bill Vogel was "circumspect and prudent."

The judge also reaffirmed the important concept that community participants in school rezoning play only an advisory role. The ultimate responsibility for school rezoning rests with the School Board, and it cannot be any other way.

It's crucial for parents and others to keep that in mind as Seminole undertakes middle-school rezoning this year.

Mr. Clark got it right when he stated "rezoning is a thankless responsibility."

The Lake Brantley and Winter Springs-area parents who are unhappy with the assigned new schools and who challenged the rezoning need to accept the judge's decision. Their time is better spent preparing for the next school year instead of appealing to a circuit court, which is counterproductive.
